Fortresses and sites
The sites that rebuild the image of the Dacia of old.
The silent traces of Dacia – a journey through the Dacian fortresses and sites
Before Roman roads cut through the mountains, before the legions conquered the high fortresses, the Dacians lived in these lands – a free people, skilled in crafts, mysterious and deeply bound to nature. Their traces have not disappeared. On the contrary, they lie today under grass, stone and forest, in hundreds of archaeological sites waiting to be discovered, studied or simply… understood.
Fortresses of stone and faith
Imagine a world in which circular stone sanctuaries stand quietly on the peaks of the Orăștie Mountains, while in the valley Dacian craftsmen forge iron and build fortifications without mortar, but with a precision hard to match. These are not stories, but the reality that archaeology reveals: Sarmizegetusa Regia, Blidaru, Costești, Piatra Roșie – fortresses that formed a refined defensive system, conceived not only as defensive walls but also as spiritual centres.
Here, in the heart of Dacia, sky and earth, science and myth, life and faith came together. These places still keep the energy of a people who did not write their history, but left it engraved in stone and in the soul of the mountains.
A living map of the past
With the help of the modern tools made available by CIMEC (the National Heritage Institute), we can today look into the past more clearly than ever. On the CIMEC Map, you can discover the places where Dacian traces have been found – whether fortresses, settlements, necropolises or simple artefacts.
Every point on the map tells a story. Some hide fragments of polished black pottery. Others – arrowheads, oil lamps, spiral gold bracelets or traces of trade routes. And all of them together make up a fascinating picture of a civilisation as old as it was advanced.
RAN – the encyclopaedia of the archaeological heritage
For those who look for more exact data, the RAN database (the National Archaeological Repertory) gives access to official records of the sites across the country. Here you can search by locality, code, type of site or county. You will find technical information, research documents, the legal status of the sites and often even details about recent discoveries.
It is a digital treasure, less known to the general public, but indispensable for researchers, guides, teachers and anyone who wants to understand history beyond the story.
Dacian sites beyond Orăștie
Dacia was not limited to a single mountain. Dacian traces have been found all over the country: from earth fortresses in the south of Oltenia and fortified settlements in the Mureș Valley, to possible trading outposts in Dobrogea, on the banks of the Danube. Each discovery redraws the map of the Dacian world, showing us how vast and complex this universe was.

A legacy we must keep
Many of these places are protected by law. Others, unfortunately, are vulnerable: to oblivion, to time, to vandalism. To visit them, to understand them and to respect them is an act of collective memory. The Dacians left us no writings. But they left us the silence of stone, the shape of the sacred circle and their traces in the soil. It is our duty to listen to them.
We have travelled among stones, shadows and symbols – but the journey does not end here.
The Dacian fortresses do not ask to be understood, but to be felt.
They speak to those who know how to listen,
and remind them that the past is not oblivion, but foundation.
“Behind every ruin there is a people that still lives in memory.”
The experience is complete when the senses work together. Start the music and explore Dacia with an open heart, through sound, history and the spirit of a forgotten world that still whispers among ruins and legends.
