Zalmoxis
Philosopher, spiritual leader and divinity revered by the Geto-Dacians. According to Herodotus, he was a disciple of Pythagoras. He founded the Zalmoxian religion, centred on the immortality of the soul and spiritual initiation. It is said that he lived in isolation in a cave and was considered a god after his death.
“The Getae believe that they do not die, but go to Zalmoxis.”
— Strabo, Geography, VII.3.5
“He had taught them that neither he nor they would die, but only move to a place where they would live for ever.”
— Herodotus, Histories, IV.94–96
